Fantastic Memphis Barbeque and Southern Soul Food

If there is one thing that Memphis is known for, it is not only Elvis Presley nor Home of the Blues, but more like the Memphis Style Barbeque and the Southern Soul Food.

Every May, Memphis is transformed into a barbeque food junkie’s dream as Memphis host the WCBCC (World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest) that allows some of the best chefs around the country to showcase their talents. Many famous barbeque restaurants got their start here in the heart of Memphis. Neely’s was first featured on a major food channel when their restaurant was visited. That started the ball rolling. Today, Pat and Gina are America’s sweetheart couple who now have their own TV show and have been guest on countless other shows. Another hot spot that is a must when visiting is The Rendezvous in the heart of downtown right by the Peabody Hotel. This location was first opened in 1948 and has been visited by by some of the most well known celebrities.

However, don’t think that Memphis only has barbeque to offer. This is the South, right? Stick to your ribs Southern Soul Food. Fried chicken, collard greens, dirty rice, beans, and who could forget the dessert of bread pudding and pies. Gus’s World Fried Chicken is worth the 20 minute wait just to be seated. Critics mark this as one restaurant that is not to be overlooked. The menu is simple, the food is served in Styrofoam containers, and the chicken’s spices just dance on your tongue. There are several more that deserve to be mentioned such as Little Tea Shop, Alcenia’s, and who could forget-Big Foot Lodge, where there is a 4LB burger. Yes, mouth watering, juicy 4LB’s of hamburger known as the Sasquach. Yet, the best part of this hamburger is -if you are able to consume the whole hamburger in an hour, then it is free.
