Honoring The Struggle At The National Civil Rights Museum

The Civil Rights Museum is housed at the location where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, the Lorraine Motel. The address is 405 Mulberry, in Memphis, Tennessee. The motel was purchased at a debtor’s auction by a group of concerned citizens. The museum was dedicated on July 4, 1991 and opened on September 28th of that year. The museum now owns much of the evidence of the case, being obtained from the court and the police.

The current exhibits were placed on September 28, 2002, and are called Exploring the Legacy. This 12,800 square foot exhibit strives to answer three questions. The first question is what happened to the Civil Rights Movement after the assassination. The second question examines rather James Earl Ray was the assassin. The third question strives to examine what the movement meant. The museum currently houses a long term exhibit on what it took to build the museum. Most of the exhibits in the museum are done with pictures and drawings. There are very few interactive exhibits. The museum is available to be rented for special events. The museum, also, has special events such as art activities for kids while teaching them about the Civil Rights Movement.
